Start with provenance
Ask about ownership history, storage conditions, round count estimates, modifications, and included documentation. Treat unsupported claims cautiously.
External condition
- Look for corrosion, cracks, damaged fasteners, and evidence of impact.
- Check stock fit and obvious movement.
- Inspect sights and mounts for damage.
Mechanical inspection
Keep the rifle unloaded and pointed safely. Have a qualified gunsmith evaluate headspace, chamber, bore, locking surfaces, trigger safety, and any questionable modification.
Walk-away signs
Walk away from an unclear serial number, signs of unsafe alteration, a seller who resists inspection, or any transaction that does not comply with applicable law.
